How you can make a difference (5) DONATE BLOOD

By now many of you will know that I have a lot of 'confessions' on here... well here's the next one.

I have never donated blood.

To be honest, in my pre-marriage and babies days, I didn't really know anything about it. It wasn't really on my radar.

Then once i'd learned about it - there was always a reason why I couldn't. Every time I'd think, 'I should donate blood', I'd either recently got a tattoo, had a baby, was breastfeeding or was sick.

But now there is no excuse. For the last nine months I have been clear of all of the reasons that have held me back...so why haven't I done it?

Well, like many of you, I'm busy. Things that don't involve my immediate family or current circumstances don't rate as a priority.

Then I had this revelation... what if my immediate family needed blood?

Did you know....?

1 in 3 people will need blood.

BUT

1 in 30 donate blood.

What if someone I cared about dearly was in a life threatening situation needed a transfusion and there wasn't enough blood available to sustain them?

What if I needed it?

Wow. All of a sudden, my priorities changed.

My husband has donated blood on many occasions. He's one of those rare blood types and the Red Cross just LOVE him. They chase him up constantly for donations and he's on their regular donor program. It's been on my radar through him, so I need to stop ignoring and start making time for something that is so very important.

So today I made my very first appointment to donate blood.

It was so simple! Just a few brief questions online and the appointment was booked.

The Australian Red Cross DONATE BLOOD website can answer all your questions. There's a quiz to make sure you're eligible and the booking service is so easy.

Your small donation could do something seriously BIG. It could save a life.

Make an appointment today :)

  1. Thanks Steph!!
Chloe and many of her heart friends have needed multiple blood transfusions after hours in surgery. I used to donate all the time pre kids and have started to again now that I am able.
Donating blood DOES save lives, it HAS saved lives....My Chloe is my living breathing proof of how important it is :)

  2. As an emergency nurse I see first-hand how blood saves lives. Good on you Steph! Hope more people are prompted to give blood from your blog.

  3. I am sometimes amazed that more people don't give blood. It's a part of us that is always regenerating and you only do it 4 times a year. I stepped through my fear/concern/ hesitancy to donate plasma - I've done it twice now. It's a fairly painless process (needle in) and you get lollypops!
